Facts about Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty

The recent Jack Abramoff Affair has exposed the corruption that occurs when public officials have close ties to special interest lobbyists.  Tim Pawlenty's lax attitude on the issue is enlightening.

On Tim Pawlenty's watch as majority leader, the House Republican Caucus charged $5,000 for a dinner where high-rolling contributors were given their choice of two House members to grace their table.  Majority Leader Pawlenty claimed that lobbyists were not buying special access by attending because, "these are, for the most part, people we see all the time."  (Star Tribune,  "Legislators seek lobbyist money before deadline," December 16, 2000.)  Governor Pawlenty himself was a lobbyist for special interest before becoming a legislator.
